The history of the T-shirt according to Munky UK.

And a bit about us.......

In 1783, Doctor Wilhelm frederick Von-Tee invented the ‘Von-Tee-Shirt’ . Originally used as a cost effective ‘Man boob girdle’ it soon became a fashion statement in its own right, and was worn by peasant and prince alike!

During the ‘great tweed shortage’ of 1909, the market for ‘Von-Tee-shirt’s’ exploded worldwide and soon became the upper body garment of choice for millions.

By 1965 the ‘T-shirt’ as it was now known was available in up to 3 different colours, including both white and black, and had become the biggest selling cotton garment of all time. They were so popular at this time, that the King of America declared it a federal crime ‘not to own one’.

1980 and the ‘Printed T-shirt’ is invented by the Rt Hon Mr M C Hammer, It becomes an instant hit, and changes the face of the humble ‘T-Shirt’ forever.

March 25th, 1997 and the world economy is in free fall, an economic boost of £1.5 gazillion pounds is needed to keep the world literally turning on its axis. The British Prime Minister Terry Wogan declares a world wide 50% off sale on ‘Take That’ T-shirts in an attempt to generate the much needed cash. The plan works, and over £2 gazillion is raised. Wogan day is officially incorporated into the British calendar.

For 20 years, not much happens.....

Until the 8th of November 2007 and a brotherhood of T-shirt designers, assembles in the Hampshire countryside to discuss the future of the T-shirt Industry. After consuming nearly 30 tubs of Swedish peanut butter and a rice cracker, it is decided that an organization is to be formed to inject new life into the ‘Custom T-shirt’ market and bring the world a better class of T-shirt at a more affordable price!

After drawing a random word from a hat....

Munky UK is born and the future of the humble T-shirt along with it!
